newtown, my thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this really difficult and incomprehensible time. but be assured that as a member of congress, i'm going to work with you, i'm going to continue to pray with you, and i'm going to make certain that this doesn't happen again because we have an obligation, we know what our to-do list is and we have only to do it before year's end and with that i yield. . mr. murphy: i yield to the gentleman from new york, mr. engel. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman is recognized. mr. engel: mr. speaker, i have been to newtown, connecticut, and it's less than an hour's drive from my congressional district. we mourn all the people who lost their lives on friday, including 20 elementary school children and six educators. over the past few years, we have seen innocent lives lost to gun violence in a supermarket parking lot in arizona, a movie theater in colorado, an army base in texas, a college campus in virginia and now an elementary school in connecticut. the weapons have spawned these tragedies and long past time that we control them. the s

connecticut on the floor here, and i know they are coming to speak about the horrible tramgd in newtown last friday. i will abbreviate my remarks so they can have the floor and commend both of them for extraordinary statements last night at a memorial service. i will not forget ever some of the things they shared with us about this terrible tragedy. but i come to the floor this morning just for a few moments to pay tribute to one of my great friends and one of my great colleagues, danny inouye, who passed away yesterday. the majority leader has done such an extraordinary job recounting his life, and i think back what it must have meant to him as he witnessed pearl harbor at the age of 20. he said that he realized at the time that the pilots in those planes that were bombing his family and others in hawaii were people of the same ancestry as his father, and it hurt him. it hurt him as well to be branded as suspect because of his japanese origin and to see literally tens of thousands of japanese americans interned in camps because their loyalty was questioned. he took the opportunity to volunt

, good afternoon, everyone. the entire congress is united and condemning the violence in newtown, and on the need to enforce our laws. as we continue to learn the facts, congress will examine whether there is an appropriate and constitutional response that would better protect our citizens. with regard to the year end tax issue, i would remind everyone that in the summer of 2010 senator schumer said, quote, first i don't know a single one of my colleagues who wouldn't prefer to do tax breaks for people up to $1 million. it's my understanding that that is essentially the proposal that the house of representatives is likely to send over to us later in the week. >> well, i think the other thing that's getting lost in the whole debate about the fiscal cliff is where are the savings, where are the spending cuts. the president has talked about a balanced plan, but as they've tried to negotiate with speaker boehner and the house leadership, it continues to focus on one issue and that is how much are we going to raise taxes on small businesses which is, as we said before, a terrible idea
